Drafting a Wellness Policy

If you have been waiting for an opportunity to meet New Canaan food services director Bruce Gluck, join me at tomorrow's PTC meeting, Wednesday, May 20 at 9:15 am in South Hall at South School.  This is your opportunity to show support for all of the positive changes he has made and find out what else he and his team have in the works.

Did you know that only 60.8% of New Canaan Public School students meet the state standard for physical fitness on all four tests (flexibility, abdominal strength and endurance, upper body strength and aerobic endurance)?  Statistics like this can help us focus on measurable goals for nutrition education, physical activity, food provision and other school-based activities designed to promote student wellness.

If you have access to a wellness policy at a school you admire, please share it with me.  Let's work with our administration to make a strong policy that makes it easier for our children to choose healthy foods and find time for physical fitness.

Stay tuned for more information about plans to make New Canaan a healthier and more active community.  Plans for Edible Schoolyards and finding more time for lunch are on hold until we get a wellness policy in place.
