Planting Healthy Habits

I am working with Bruce Gluck, the director of food services for New Canaan public schools, to improve the quality of school food.  Together, we hope to create an Edible Schoolyard (an outdoor "classroom" used to teach the community how to grow, harvest, and prepare healthy seasonal fruits and vegetables).  Communities around the country are starting similar projects and achieving amazing results.  Visit http://www.edibleschoolyard.org/homepage.html for information about Alice Waters and edible schoolyards.  For statistics and testimonials proving the value of this project, please visit http://www.kidsgardening.org/grants/2008-evaluation-summary.asp.

Right now, all we need is people to support the idea.  I am going to try to engage all of the groups within our community - from the schools, to the community organizations to the teen center and senior center.  My hope is that by working together we can learn from each other, strengthen the ties within our community and improve our health.

We owe it to our children to give them every advantage - including the nutrition and exercise they need to focus in school, play hard and grow strong.   To that end, I am doing my part to change the system so that this generation can develop healthy habits and learn by example about the impact of nutrition on health.

I invite you to
join Nourish New Canaan.  If you have any particular expertise you would like to share, please let me know.   Thank you in advance for your support!
